Pell Grant

Grants are financial aids which are not repaid but given by the federal government for those who are in need of assistance to finish their college education. Grants are provided based upon the financial status of the student calculated by the Federal Aid Program. It will be an advantage for a student like you if you’ve been awarded with a grant. In the first place it is free unlike loan programs. However, grants are of limited funding so don’t expect that all your college expenses will be covered by it.

One of the most common grants is the Pell grant. The Pell grant is named after U.S. Senator Claiborne Pell and it was originally known as the Basic Educational Opportunity Grant program. This financial aid is under the US Department of Education and covered by the legislation titled the Higher Education Act of 1965, Title IV, Part A, Subpart 1; 20 U.S.C. 1070a. The Pell grant’s aim is to aid full and part time college students in the United States and as of now it covers around 5.3 million students.

The first thing that you should do in applying in this grant is to fill up the FAFSA form. This application is accessible on every high school, colleges, and the FAFSA website. After that you just wait for a mail considering you as qualified for the Pell grant.

One of the basic requirements to be eligible in the Pell grant is that your over all family income must not exceed $45,000. Those that have less than $20,000 total income are more qualified and given more consideration for this grant. Other qualifications are you must be a bonafide US resident and if you are male you have to apply for the Selective Services. You must also be enrolled in course leading to a degree or certificate.

For this year you can get as much as $4,310 when you pass the eligibility requirements of the Pell grant. This may depend on your financial status, the expense you will incur in the university you are in, your standing as a full or part time student and how long you are going to attend your course.

You can use the Pell Grant in almost all universities in the United Stated. As of now it covers around 5,400 universities and colleges.
